MetroPCS Is Now Metro by T-Mobile

T-Mobile and MetroPCS completed their business combination in 2013. The MetroPCS brand was renamed Metro by T-Mobile in 2018, and the legacy CDMA network was retired. Today, Metro service runs on T-Mobile’s GSM, LTE, and 5G network: same towers, same spectrum, same coverage map.

For phone shoppers, that means compatibility follows T-Mobile’s network requirements. Many unlocked phones designed for T-Mobile’s network can also work on Metro, but Metro confirms each specific device’s IMEI before activation. Check the IMEI Before You Buy or Activate

Your IMEI is the number carriers use to identify one specific phone. Dial *#06# to see it, or find it under Settings → About Phone.

What a Prepaid Budget Usually Buys You

Phones sold cheap in prepaid stores tend to be cheap in the ways you notice a year in: an LCD screen, 4GB of RAM, and 64GB of storage that is full by spring. The B40 5G is a 6.7″ AMOLED at 120Hz with 8GB of RAM, 256GB of storage, and a 64MP camera, currently $249.99. It also adds a second 1.6″ AMOLED on the back, the Vista Display, for notifications, music controls, and rear-camera selfie previews, which is not something that usually turns up at this price. And it ships on Android 15, so it starts its update cycle ahead of most of the shelf.

It also is not tied to Metro. A phone bought from Metro is locked to Metro’s network, and under Metro’s current unlock policy, 365 days must pass from the activation date before the device becomes eligible to be unlocked. The unlock is free, but only after a full year. A NUU phone is unlocked the day it arrives, so if a better prepaid deal turns up in four months, the phone comes with you.

One Phone, Three Networks (With One Caveat)

T-Mobile and Mint Mobile run on the same network as Metro, so the same band support generally makes these NUU models suitable for those services as well. Band support isn’t the whole story, though: activation methods, IMEI whitelists, and APN details can differ between the three. Run the relevant carrier’s compatibility check before purchasing or activating a plan.
